What is Website Advertising?
Every day, newspapers and magazines are shutting down their printing presses and moving their business to online websites, or closing their doors permanently. Companies that used to advertise in newspapers or magazines, are finding they get the biggest returns for their advertising investments through “target market advertising” and advertising on “strategic domain names” and on the websites where their customers and
prospective customers visit.
Website advertising simply means to advertise online, on a website, and getting your advertisement on the “strategic websites” that are related to the products or services that your company offers. These websites are strategic as they are based on strategic domain names that provide both a “strategic competitive advantage” as well as a “durable competitive advantage.”
“Strategic domain names” are those critical “keyword” or keywords that comprise the generic domain name that is the product or service your company sells. If your company advertises its products or services at the websites that have the strategic domain names for your products or services, your online advertising will be successful. If your company does not advertise at these strategic websites, and your competition does,
your competition will be successful. It’s really that simple.
Every day, more and more businesses are finding that website advertising is the most effective and economical way to market their products or services to their “target market” – and that is the prospective customers you used to advertise to in newspapers, magazines, Yellow Pages, and even television and radio media. And, aren’t you finding that most commercials on the radio and television also include the website address as well as their phone number?!?
Online advertising sales has been projected to exceed $150 billion dollars by 2015. Total revenues for all advertising is expected to exceed $550 billion by 2015. That means nearly 1/3 of all advertising dollars will be spent in online advertising.
Finally, as newspapers and magazines shut down their printing presses, and go online, that does not mean these are “local” or small concerns. In fact, even the New York Times and Wall Street Journal announced in 2010, that they will be shutting down their printing presses and moving their businesses online. Online advertising is where its at, for small businesses as well as companies as large as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
What is Contextual Advertising?
Contextual advertising is a type of target-market advertising for advertisers whose ads appear on targeted websites whose content on those websites is highly relevant to the advertiser. Specific ads are selected and placed on these targeted websites automatically based on the content of the website.
Contextual advertising programs work by scanning the text of websites for targeted keywords and then returns advertisements to these websites as targeted and highly relevant advertisements. If the website visitor is viewing a website relating to healthcare and that website employs contextual advertising, the website visitor would see advertisements related to healthcare companies that may be advertising its products via the contextual advertising ads on that site.
Contextual advertising is also used by the leading search engines to display their advertisements on their respective search engines results pages – which are based on the keyword(s) or search phrase used by the person’s interests and inquiry.
Google AdSense was the first company to utilize contextual advertising. Since then, Yahoo has also integrated contextual advertising into its search engine as well as Microsoft and Bing.
